Profile
This is the only estate held TRE by someone called Æthelhelm, as is shown by the unique spelling Ailm(us) in DB and Exon (cf. von Feilitzen 1937: 78-9 §62, 184).The precise location of Æthelhelm 34’s small holding remains uncertain. The Exon order of entries implies a location in Rillaton Hundred, perhaps in the northern half of that hundred. Attempts to identify Hela with South Hill near Callington may be roughly correct in terms of location but cannot be justified philologically because Hela represents Old English hēale, the dative singular of OE halh ‘nook, valley, corner’ (a common form in south-west England) whereas the earliest forms for South Hill (Southull(e) from 1175) are derived from OE hyll ‘hill’ (cf. Thorn and Thorn 1979: 5,1,15 Notes).
