Profile

The only estates in Cornwall held TRE by someone called Ælfheah were at Tregunnick, in the hills to the east of the Fowey estuary, and Lametton, on the River Looe.  These estates lay less than 7 miles apart; by contrast, the nearest other estates held TRE by someone called Ælfheah were nearly 150 miles away in Hampshire.  Although the name Ælfheah was common and after the Conquest these two Cornish estates passed to different subtenants of Robert, count of Mortain (Robert 9) – which, given his extensive fief, may not be significant; it remains more likely than not that both were held TRE by the same man, (Unknown Person).

Both estates were tiny, although each may also have been slightly more substantial than its geld assessment suggests.  Tregunnick was assessed for ½ virgate but was worth 5s TRE, while DB noted that 1 virgate and land for 3 ploughs were there in 1086.  Lametton was yet smaller, but here too its TRE valuation of 3s and possession of land for 1 plough in 1086 could indicate a slightly larger holding than its minute assessment of just ½ ferling would suggest.
