Profile

The name Ælfheah occurs among the lists of co-holders for two manors in west Derbyshire TRE, both of which passed to Henry 6 de Ferrers after the Conquest.  The manors lay less than 3½ miles apart, with the larger being at Barton overlooking the Sutton Brook while the smaller, at Hollington, was further upstream on a hill between two of the river’s tributaries.  Given the close proximity of the manors, the similarly small size of the presumed shares in each (½ and ¼ carucate respectively, if divided equally between co-holders) and that both passed to the same TRW tenant-in-chief, it is probable that the TRE co-holder called Ælfheah in each case was the same man, (Unknown Person).  DB describes all of the holders of Hollington manor as thegns.

Ælfheah’s is the only name to occur in the entries for both of these manors and there is nothing to suggest a connection between him and the other co-holders.  It is conceivable that if (Unknown Person) and (Unknown Person) represent a single man with estates in west Nottinghamshire and east Derbyshire, then this his estates could have included those of (Unknown Person), less than 20 miles away.  However, the name Ælfheah was a fairly common one and the tiny holdings at Barton and Hollington form a discrete pair relative to the others.  On balance, therefore, it is more likely than not that (Unknown Person) was a separate person and that these were his only two estates.
