Profile
Leodmær 10’s name is spelt as both Ledmar and Leimar in DB, but the corresponding Exon entries spell it as Letmar(us) and confirm that the name is Leodmær rather than Leomær in both cases. His two estates at Ash and West Putford lay less than 2 miles apart in the Torridge valley in north-west Devon and were the only estates held TRE by someone of that or a similar name within about 40 miles. It is therefore almost certain that both estates were held by the same person and that these were his only estates.Although Leodmær 10’s estates appear to have been tiny, their combined valuation of 35s and their possession of ‘land for 5 ploughs’ could indicate a slightly larger holding than the assessment of 1½ virgates would suggest.
Leodmær 10 was described as a free man in the DB entry for Ash, with the corresponding Exon entry (335b2) showing that he had power of alienation over his land. An entry in the TO (497a3) provides the additional information that he was a thegn who held this estate in parage, although there is no further indication as to who his co-heirs, if any, might have been.
