Profile
Æthelflæd 31’s estate was at Hethfelton, on the low ridge of heathland and woods between the rivers Frome and Piddle in south-east Dorset. Some forms of the place-name have led to suggestions that it was named from Æthelflæd, but it is in fact Old English hæð-feld-tūn ‘estate at the open land where heather grows’ (Mills 1977: 146-7).Although some of the women profiled under the name Alflæd probably had names that originated as Æthelflæd, none of them held land TRE close enough to the estate of Æthelflæd 31 for a connection between them to be considered.
