Profile
Ærling 2’s manor was at Danbury, on the higher ground between Chelmsford and Maldon in east Essex; the referent of the place-name was probably an earthwork still visible in the eighteenth century (Reaney 1935: 248). The manpower for his estate relied more on slaves than on dependent peasant households, DB recording that there were 4 slaves and only 3 bordars TRE; by 1086 the position had reversed, with 9 bordars and only 1 slave recorded.Danbury was Ærling 2’s only estate and no-one else is recorded in DB as holding land there TRE. There is no other instance of the name Ærling in DB; and although confusion with the Continental Germanic name Herling is unlikely but theoretically possible, the estates of Herling 2 and Herling 3 passed to different TRW successors and are too far away from Danbury for a connection with Ærling 2 to be considered.
