Profile
Leofdæg 3’s small manor was at Shelley, on a low ridge between the river Roding and one of its tributaries in eastern Essex. DB states that he was only the man of Esgar the staller (Esgar 2) and that his manor was not a part ‘of Esger’s fief’, which implies that Leofdæg was onlycommended to Esger and not one of his dependent tenants. Nevertheless, one of Esger’s post-Conquest successors, Geoffrey de Mandeville (Geoffrey 5), apparently regarded this association as sufficient excuse to acquire Shelley along with Esger’s other estates.Leofdæg 3’s manor was too small and, at nearly 70 miles, too distant from the nearest estate held TRE by Leofdæg 2 for any connection between them to be considered.
