Profile
(Unknown Person)’s estate was called Gingā in DB, representing an Old English folk-name *Gēgingas modernized as Ing that occurs in several place-names in the Wid valley in south Essex; Ælfheah’s estate was at Mountnessing, where the folk-name has a manorial affix Mounteney from its later medieval holders (Reaney 1935: 258-61; Watts 2004: 332, 424). Ælfheah shared the estate with Algar, but the division of the estate between them and their relationship to each other (if any) is not apparent from DB. The description of the estate’s resources seems incomplete in DB, noting only two slaves and two ploughs TRE, although it is likely that as in 1086 there was sheep pasture, woodland and a small number of peasant households to augment the estate’s workforce.(Unknown Person)’s estate was more than 34 miles from any other held TRE by someone of that name and there is no reason to consider him in connection with any other estate or person.
