Profile
Ælfhelm 38’s small manor was at Manestuna, which can be identified with what is now Jacques Hall on the low ground by the Stour estuary in north-east Essex (Reaney 1935: 329).DB gives some further information about Ælfhelm’s estate TRE. He had a dependent peasant population comprising the households of one villan and four bordars along with one slave, with two ploughs on his demesne and one on the peasants’ land. It is likely that his manor then practiced a mix of arable and pastoral farming as it did under his successor in 1086, although it is unclear if the salt-pan recorded in 1086 already existed under Ælfhelm’s lordship.
Ælfhelm 38’s manor was too small and, at more than 75 miles, too far distant from any other estate held TRE by someone of that name for any connection to be considered.
