Profile

Leodmær 14 occurs in two DB entries among those dealing with the ‘Appropriations of Richard fitzGilbert’ (Richard 5) TRW and relating to a very small estate at Braintree in Essex, assessed for 30 acres and valued at 3s in 1086. In one instance he was referred to as ‘Leodmær of Hempstead’ (presumably Hempstead in Essex, 12 miles from Braintree and another of Richard 5’s estates) and was said to have appropriated the Braintree land and to have held it of Richard’s fief; in the other he was called ‘Leodmær reeve’ and was said to have claimed it as belonging to Richard’s fief. Although the circumstances of the dispute relating to Braintree are not entirely clear, the evidence suggests that Leodmær 14 was Richard 5’s reeve on one or more of the latter’s TRW estates in Essex.
