Profile

Leomær 11 shared with Leofwine a minute holding of 5 acres at Steeple Bumpstead in north Essex from Richard fitzGilbert (Richard 5) in 1086. It was among a group of six very small holdings entered together in DB (in a note of disputes titled ‘Appropriations of Richard fitzGilbert’) that had a total assessment of only 63 acres, with a combined TRE value of 30s and one of 45s 2d in 1086. The list-like format of the DB entry is ambiguous, however, and it could indicate that all of the TRW subtenants had also been the TRE holders, as was certainly the case of the first person in the ‘list’ and as may be implied by the collective reference to these men having had 3 ploughs TRE. If so, then Leomær and Leofwine were already holding their 5 acres TRE and when their lord will have been Richard’s antecessor Wihtgar (Wihtgar 10), who DB notes as having ‘only commendation over these men’.
