Profile
The precise location of Wulfræd 51’s small estate is unknown. DB states that it was in Titchfield Hundred, in south Hampshire, but also that it was a berewick of Wolverton, which lies in the north of the county. It has not been identified in later records and so for mapping purposes has been located at Titchfield. No TRE value for it is given, but this is likely to have been the same as its 1086 value of 20s.DB records that Wulfræd held his land of (de) King Edward, but this bland formula does not indicate if he was in the king’s lordship by commendation or dependent tenure. If his estate was indeed a berewick of Wolverton TRE, rather than this being post-Conquest consequence of both estates being held by Alfred the priest in 1086, then it is also possible that there was a connection of lordship between Wulfræd and Ælfgifu, the TRE holder of Wolverton. Such speculation should not be pressed further, however.
Wulfræd’s little estate is likely to have been about 50 miles from any other attributed to someone of that name and there is no reason to identify him with anyone else.
