Profile

Ællic 3 is recorded by DB as the holder of land at Keysoe in north Bedfordshire that was sokeland of the manor of Kimbolton, 3 miles away and just over the shire border in south-west Huntingdonshire.  The wording of the DB entry is terse and ambiguous but almost certainly means that Ællic was the TRE landholder rather than a TRW subtenant.  If so, then he was presumably at least partially under the lordship of Earl Harold (Harold 3), who was the TRE holder of Kimbolton.

There is another reference in DB to an Ællic holding sokeland in Huntingdonshire, in a passage underlined for deletion in the entry relating to Hamerton, a manor held by Wulfheah TRE.  The underlined section is again terse and ambiguous but should probably be read as that Ællic and Leofwine had 3 hides TRE of which the soke was in Leightonstone Hundred.  Since Hamerton is only 11¼ miles to the north of Keysoe and Kimbolton also lay in Leightonstone Hundred it is very probable that this is another reference to Ællic 2, but what the actual status of this sokeland was TRE or in 1086 remains uncertain.

Ællic 3’s lands were more than 110 miles from the small holding of Ællic 2 and no connection between them need be considered.
