Profile

Wulfræd 54 held 20 acres worth 5s within Odo 3’s manor of Hawley, by the River Darent in north-west Kent, in 1086. The DB entry states that he did not belong to the manor and that ‘he could not have a lord except the king’, which may indicate that Wulfræd held some minor royal office (perhaps originating when part of Hawley formed a shrieval adjunct to the royal manor of Dartford before the Conquest). No such office associated with Hawley is known from later records, however, and the matter must be left open. Wulfræd 54’s holding was small and distant from any held TRE by people of that name, and there is no reason to consider him in connection with any other identification.
