Profile
Ælfnoth 69 held ½ carucate of the land outside the city of Lincoln in 1086. He held it in succession to Auti, who was one of the two co-holders of the whole carucate TRE; it is possible that Ælfnoth was related to Auti because the other ½ carucate had passed from father to son by 1086. It is likely that Ælnoth and the holder of the other ½ carucate in 1086 were subtenants of Wulfgeat the priest and that the land involved was in fact 6 acres more than 1 carucate, although the wording of DB is not entirely clear here: an alternative but less likely reading would be that Wulfgeat was holding 6 acres that were associated with but separate from this particular carucate of the city’s lands. It is possible that Ælfnoth 69 is the same person as Alnoth, a man and subtenant of the bishop of Durham who held more than 6 carucates less than 20 miles to the south of Lincoln in 1086, but more evidence would be required to demonstrate a connection. No other instances of the names Ælfnoth or Alnoth occur as post-Conquest inhabitants of Lincolnshire in DB, however, and there is no reason to consider Ælfnoth 69 in connection with anyone else.
