Profile
Leofdæg 2’s largest estate, amounting to half his land in terms of assessment, was at East Kennet, where the Ridge Way crosses the river Kennet near Avebury in Wiltshire. His other two estates were both at Keyford, just to the south-east of Frome in east Somerset and 25 miles from East Kennet. Given the sizes of the estates this is close enough for them to have been held by one man and, given the extreme rarity of the name Leofdæg, this is the most likely interpretation even though all three of these estates passed to different post-Conquest successors. The only other estate held TRE by someone of that name, however, was that of Leofdæg 3 in east Essex, nearly 70 miles from Kennet and so too far away for a connection with Leofdæg 2 to be considered.
