Profile

In 1086 Ælfhelm 42 was the bishop of Chester’s subtenant for an estate at Fradswell, on a tributary of the River Trent in Staffordshire and an outlier of the episcopal manor at Haywood 5½ miles to the south.  Although the hidage figure is omitted from DB the TRE and 1086 values of 3s and 13s 4d respectively make it very probable that this was a small estate of less than 1 hide.  The estate was only 28 miles from that of Ælfhelm 41 in north Worcestershire but both estates were small and held from different tenants-in-chief, the name was fairly common and it is unlikely that the two men were the same person.
