Profile

(Unknown Person)’s tiny holding was at Middleton, on the Minsmere River a couple of miles inland from the east Suffolk coast.  He was one of six ‘free men’ [in fact including one free woman] sharing a tiny holding of 50 acres under various lordships.  DB describes Ælfheah as being ‘half [Munulf’s man]’, which probably means that his commendation was divided between Munulf, the TRE holder of the main Middleton estate, and some other unnamed lord; since the commendation of Munulf’s own estate was divided TRE between the antecessors of Earl Hugh 8 and Robert 36 Malet, it may be that one of these antecessors had the other half of Ælfheah’s commendation.

Although (Unknown Person)’s holding was only 22½ miles from that of (Unknown Person), the name was fairly common and his holding was so small that there is no reason to consider him in connection with any other estate or person.
