Profile

The location of Eadræd 42’s tiny holding is uncertain, although it was certainly in Bosmere Hundred in Suffolk.  The place-name is given as Tonestala in DB; woodland associated with a Stonham manor was also located there and it is clear that this Tonestala was distinct from the Tunstall in Parham Half-hundred.  Darby and Versey (1975: 413-14 and map 47) locate Eadræd’s Tonestala in Nettlestead, but the basis for this identification is not given.  In the absence of further evidence, a location near the centre of Bosmere Hundred has been adopted here.

DB describes Eadræd as a free man who was commended to Wihtgar the staller, which suggests that although Wihtgar was his lord Eadræd was not one of Wihtgar’s dependent tenants.

Eadræd 42’s holding was far too small and too far away from any others held TRE by someone of that name for a connection between them to be considered.
