Profile

The name Sæmann occurs only twice in DB, at two small estates in Copthorne hundred, Surrey. One of them was 1 hide at Mideham which Sæmann had held from King Edward TRE ‘and now holds from King William’. mideham is written in the usual capitals but the d must have been miscopied as a lower-case d for cl in some earlier version. The other holding was an unnamed virgate which Sæmann held from King Edward TRE with power of alienation; DB adds that ‘from the time when King William came into England he has served Osweald’, that is, Sæmann had placed himself under the protection of Osweald, brother of Abbot Wulfweald of Chertsey ; Osweald was one of the more significant English survivors in southern England. That virgate has here been presumed also to have lain at Mickleham, on the North Downs in mid Surrey, the location of one of Osweald’s own estates too (Surr. 19:19). DB says nothing of the resources on Sæmann’s virgate, but his other holding had 1 demesne plough, 3 bordars, and ½ acre of meadow in 1086.
