Profile

(Unknown Person)’s little estate was at Langney (from Old English langan-ēg ‘long island’; Mawer et al 1929-30: ii 447), in the marshes on the southern fringe of what was then Pevensey harbour (successor to Roman Anderitum) in east Sussex.  The DB entry gives no details of lord or nature of tenure, nor does the post-Conquest succession yield further clues.  Another hide at Langney was shared between Leomær 5 and Beorhtstan 15 and held ‘in alod’ TRE; and although this need not imply that Ælfheah’s land was held in a similar way it is notable that the value of 16s 8d entered after Ælfheah’s estate in DB seems to include both of the Langney hides.  It is also worth noting that the large estate of (Unknown Person) lay less than 23 miles away, but the name was a fairly common one and does not provide strong grounds for an identification.  Although a connection cannot entirely be ruled out, on balance the probability is that Langney was (Unknown Person)’s only estate and there is no reason to associate him with any other person of that name.
