Profile

The two manors in north Warwickshire assigned to the rare name Ceolræd are only about 5 miles apart and on geographical grounds can be confidently assigned to the same person. The 5-hide vill of Shuttington in the Anker valley was divided into two shares of 2½ hides, one held by the free men Ceolræd and Godric, the other by Godric alone. The mill, meadow, and woodland were divided equally between the two shares, though the arable and population were different in 1086 (Warws. 16:22–23). Both halves of Shuttington passed after the Conquest to Robert, count of Meulan, Godric remaining as his tenant on the half which he had held alone, and Leofwine being tenant of the other half. To the south, on a tributary of the Anker, Baddesley Ensor was a vill of 2 hides, four fifths of which was held TRE by Archil and Ceolræd, men of Thorkil of Warwick. Thorkil himself held the manor in 1086. This places Ceolræd in the affinity of one of the greater thegns of the shire in 1066.
