Profile

Wimbolds Trafford on the lower Gowy a few miles north-east of Chester was divided into two manors TRE which belonged to Leofric and Guthlac 5, named in that order. The order perhaps indicates that Guthlac’s tenure was in some way subordinate to Leofric’s. The name Guthlac occurs only here in Domesday Book, other than in the name of the wealthy Benedictine monastery at Crowland (Lincs.).
