Profile

The group of five holdings in Yorkshire, less than 5 miles apart and all passing to Ilbert de Lacy, can be confidently assigned to one landowner. He was probably based at Halton, the only one of the places where he alone held land. His outlying properties a short distance to the west were all at places where he had one among multiple manors. The other manors at Snitertun, Reestones and Armley, and Beeston (the last sokeland nearby at Hunslet) belonged to different men in each case: Morfari occurs third among the four owners at Snitertun, first of two at Reestones and Armley, and second of two at Beeston, but the significance of his position is not clear.

These Yorkshire estates were too far from the Cheshire Morfari for them to be the same person.
