Name

Særæd

Summary

Særæd 2 was a small thegn who jointly held 3½ hides worth 25s. His partner at one of the two manors concerned was his brother.

Profile

The name Særæd only occurs twice in DB, and as the two estates are only 30 miles apart there is a prima facie case for thinking that they belonged to the same person. At one of the Blandford estates in the middle Stour valley where it cuts through the chalk downs of mid Dorset, probably to be identified as Langton Long Blandford (Phill. Dors. note 26,29), Særæd and his unnamed brother held 1½ hides ‘in parage’ (in paragio). At Stone, just over the county boundary into Dorset, Særæd was named alone as the TRE holder of 2 hides, but was also said to hold jointly (pariter) (Exon 454a3, 522b5). It tempting to think that the joint holder there must also have been Særæd’s brother. If so, they had 3½ hides worth 25s. between them, with Særæd evidently the older brother.
