Summary

Toli 10 was a small landowner in east Nottinghamshire, with one main holding TRE. Its exact assessment and value are unclear because it was in a shared vill, but likely to have been under 2 carucates and £1. Toli survived the Conquest as a king’s thegn, consolidating his property in the same vill so that in 1086 he had over 5½ carucates worth £2.

Profile

Proximity and survival to 1086 suffice to identify Toli 10. In 1086 he was among the king’s thegns in Derbyshire, with a holding of 5¼ carucates at Sandiacre and 3 bovates attached to it some 4 miles away at Ilkeston. Both vills were on the river Dove which here forms the boundary with Nottinghamshire. His manor of Sandiacre included two demesne ploughteams, a church, and a mill on the river.

Toli 10’s holding before the Conquest was smaller: only a share of the main holding at Sandiacre and the outlier at Ilkeston. But he was named first of the three men who held the 4 carucates of Sandiacre, and some kind of superior tenure may explain why it was he who survived to 1086 as tenant.

There is no reason to connect this small thegn with the Toli who held in south Lincolnshire over 40 miles to the east (Toli 12), let along with any of the more distant Tolis.
