Profile

The entry for Uhtbrand 2’s manor at Denton says that its soke belonged to Grantham. The complex entry for Grantham in Domesday Book identifies it as a great estate which belonged to Queen Eadgyth TRE and King William in 1086 and had sokeland in many other places(Lincs. 1:9–25). The relationship of the holders of Grantham sokeland with the central estate is not specified, and Uhtbrand 2 may have been unable to remove his land from the Grantham’s jurisdiction.

Denton was quite a small manor some 25 miles from the Trent valley estates which we have assigned to Uhtbrand 3: it is not at all likely that they were the same person.
