Profile

Snitertun is a lost place in Skyrack wapentake, probably in the neighbourhood of Leeds (Faull and Moorhouse 1981: II, 233, 327–8), Uhtræd being named last among the four holders of manors there. The other three (Niveling 2, Maban 3, and Morfari 2) had unusual names which otherwise appear in DB only in the immediate vicinity. That pattern suggests that this Uhtræd, too, occurs only at Snitertun. The occurrence in the same place of four personal names which range from quite unusual to wildly exotic is rather remarkable. Were they brothers? If so, their parents had inventive tastes when it came to naming their boys.
