Profile

Uhtræd’s holding at Ashwell, below the Chiltern escarpment at the northern tip of Hertfordshire, was too small and isolated for him to be identified with even the nearest other Uhtræd. It comprised ½ hide which Uhtræd held under Robert fitzWimarc (Robert 14), without power of alienation, as the men of the hundred testified during the Domesday inquest. Robert fitzWimarc had lands and men near by in Huntingdonshire and Cambridgeshire as well as Hertfordshire. The value of 30s. given for 1066 may have been the rent that Uhtræd paid Robert, a steep one for only 1 ploughland; it was reckoned worth only 10s. when the incoming Norman Hardwin de Scales acquired it.
