Profile

Killigorrick stands on one of the head-streams of the East Looe at around 500 ft, some 45 miles from the nearest Devon manor held by a Uhtræd. It was a very small place, assessed at only 1 fiscal acre though paying geld for ½ ferding (3¾ fiscal acres) and worth only 3s. Its small size is emphasized by the fact that the population and resources returned in 1086 amounted to only 1 slave and 10 acres of woodland. Given the rarity of Uhtræd as a personal name across southern England, it is conceivable that Killigorrick was an outlier of the Devon estate of Uhtræd 28, but on balance its isolation and tiny size argue to the contrary, and for the identification of Uhtræd 29 as a small upland farmer.
