Profile

Guilden Morden was one of the south Cambridgeshire vills much divided among small landowners TRE (Cambs. 13:2; 22:7; 26:20; 32:8). Winterled held just ½ virgate, the size of a standard peasant farm, from Earl Ælfgar (d. 1062) and was not free to alienate it. It was attached to the earl’s manor of Litlington (Cambs. 1:18) a couple of miles up one of the roads to Cambridge. Who held Litlington and was Winterled’s lord in 1066 is not clear.
