Profile

Ællic 4 is listed in FBB (136v) among 112 minor tenants on the manor of Bury St Edmunds Abbey at Rougham, 3¾ miles to the east-south-east of Bury, in 1086; the immediately preceding name in the list is for Æluine Ællicesune (Alwine ), who was presumably the son of the same Ællic.  The corresponding DB entry records 90 free men and 11 bordars (and 1 slave) on the non-demesne part of the manor in 1086 but does not give their names.  FBB records Ællic 4 as holding 1 acre and his son 1½ acres at Rougham in 1086, but does not note any payment or service rendered for this.  The implicit continuity of holdings between TRE and 1086 in DB does not prove that Ællic 4 already held his land before the Conquest, although the possibility cannot be ruled out.
