Profile
Beorhtwig 12 is named in FBB (fol. 135; p. 25) among 63 minor tenants on the estate of Bury St Edmunds Abbey at Great Barton, just over 2½ miles to the north-east of Bury, in 1086; the corresponding DB entry records 70 free men on the estate both TRE and in 1086 but does not include their names. Beorhtwig 12 was one of Bury’s smaller tenants at Great Barton, sharing with Godric a holding of 4 acres that rendered 4d and service. The implicit continuity of holdings between TRE and 1086 in DB does not prove that Beorhtwig 12 already held his land before the Conquest, although the possibility cannot be ruled out.
