Name

Boia
Boia 40

Summary

Boia 41 is not named in DB but according to FBB (fo 135) he held 2 acres as a subtenant of Bury Abbey’s estate at Great Barton in Suffolk in 1086, for which he rendered 2d; he was presumably one of the seventy unnamed free men recorded on the estate in DB.  His name is spelt Boio in FBB, which could represent an otherwise unrecorded instance of the Continental Germanic form Boio rather than the insular form Boia, but he is grouped here under the latter form for convenience.  Given that the name Boia appears to have been uncommon in general use, it is highly likely that the Godui Boie filius (Godwig) recorded by FBB as holding 20 acres in the same estate in 1086 was Boia 41’s son.
