Summary
Frawine 2 held an alodial estate in west Sussex TRE with an assessment of 5 hides and a value of £5; King Edward (Edward 15) was his lord.Profile
Although DB describes Frawin 2 as ‘holding from’ King Edward (Edward 15) it also specifies that the land at Barlavington was an alod, which implies land held freehold and without a tenurial lord. It is therefore probable that King Edward was in fact Frawin 2’s lord by commendation rather than through dependent tenure.Barlavington lies on the South Downs in west Sussex, with the streams running across the parish and down towards the river Rother no doubt powering the two mills mentioned as part of Frawin 2’s estate in Domesday Book. It lies far too far away from the small TRE estates of Frawin 3 in Devon for there to have been any connection between the two namesakes.
