Profile

Leomær 15 is named in FBB (135v, as Lemar prepositus) among about 47 minor tenants on the manor of Bury St Edmunds Abbey at Pakenham, 5 miles to the north-east of Bury, in 1086; the corresponding DB entry records a total of 34 free men, 44 villans and 29 bordars on various parts of the manor in 1086 but does not include their names. Leomær 15 was not among Bury’s bigger tenants at Pakenham, holding only 5½ acres and rendering 6d, but his title of prepositus ‘reeve’ implies a role in the management of the estate. The implicit continuity of holdings between TRE and 1086 in DB does not prove that Leomær 15 already held his land before the Conquest, although the possibility cannot be ruled out.
