Profile

Leomær 18 was the son of Crawe 2 and is named in FBB (136v, as Lemmer Crauue filius) among 112 minor tenants on the manor of Bury St Edmunds Abbey at Rougham, 3¾ miles to the east-south-east of Bury, in 1086. The corresponding DB entry records 90 free men and 11 bordars (and 1 slave) on the non-demesne part of the manor in 1086 but does not include their names. FBB records Leomær 18 as holding 3 acres at Rougham (rendering 2d and service) in 1086. The implicit continuity of holdings between TRE and 1086 in DB does not prove that Leomær 18 already held his land before the Conquest, although the possibility cannot be ruled out. The Old English name Crawe is extremely rare and so it is almost certain that Leomær 18 and Beorhtric, both described as Crauue filius in the FBB list of tenants at Rougham, were brothers.
