Summary

Leomær 20 is named in FBB as one of the minor tenants on the berewick of Bury St Edmunds Abbey at Woolpit, Suffolk, in 1086.

Profile

Leomær 20 occurs only in FBB (138, in the form Ælfui Lemmeri pater), the actual reference being to his father Ælfwig, one of the minor tenants on the berewick of Bury St Edmunds Abbey at Woolpit, Suffolk, in 1086. To identify a man by reference to his son’s name is unusual and suggests that the son was locally more prominent or recognizable. It is therefore tempting to identify Leomær 20 with Leomær 21, who was the hayward at Woolpit; but the name is not uncommon in the FBB texts and the possibility must be left open. The implicit continuity of holdings between TRE and 1086 in DB does not prove that Leomær 20 already held his land before the Conquest, although the possibility cannot be ruled out.
