Profile
Erneis 3’s small TRE estate was at Penhallym in north-east Cornwall. It was far from the estates held in 1086 by people called Erneis, nor is there any other reason to link Erneis 3 with any of them.Although his estate paid geld for only ½ hide TRE it was clearly much larger than this assessment suggests, as is shown by the DB record that 1½ hides and land for 10 ploughs were present and its TRE value of 40s. This could represent an instance of beneficial hidation but is more likely to be a further example of the under-assessment noted elsewhere in Cornwall and Devon.
It is interesting to note someone with an Old French name holding land in north-east Cornwall TRE (where other continental names were also present TRE), but there is no further information about him or how he came to be there.
