Profile

Hunding 3 held one of two manors at the place in the Derbyshire Peak District where William Peverel had already by 1086 planted the castle which later gave rise to the name of Castleton. The Domesday scribe added the English place-name Pechesers (literally Peak’s Arse, originally the name of the dark cave now called Peak Cavern) as an afterthought. The other manor belonged to Arnbern 1, and was, like Hunding’s, his only recorded possession in Derbyshire. There is nothing to connect the owner of Castleton with (Unknown Person) or Hunding 4, whose manors were 15 and more miles away across very difficult country.
