Profile
Gilbert 22’s small estate was at Malmesbury, by the River Avon in north-west Wiltshire. DB notes that it was in the hands of Geoffrey, bishop of Coutances (Geoffrey 2) in 1086, but the manor cannot be traced in later medieval records and so was probably absorbed into the lands of Malmesbury Abbey (Crowley et al. 1991: 132-3). It is possible that Gilbert’s estate represented a short-lived alienation of a part of the abbey’s endowment.Lewis (1995: 136) suggests that Gilbert held urban property in Malmesbury. This is of course possible, but there is no indication in DB of a house or burgess there being attached to his estate nor indeed to any held by Bishop Geoffrey in 1086.
