Profile

The 6-carucate vill of Great Houghton, on the rising ground east of the Dearne valley in southern Yorkshire, was divided into four manors TRE. Three of the manors belonged to the three unnamed sons of Hunding and were assessed at 5 carucates 2 bovates; the fourth, of 6 bovates, belonged to Godhyse 3. The relationship, if any, between Hunding’s sons and Godhyse is not clear, and there is no means of identifying Hunding’s sons by name. Hunding himself had presumably held the whole 5 carucates 2 bovates. Hunding’s death before 1066 means that he cannot be identified with any of the other Hundings, whose equally small estates are in any case some considerable distance away.
