Profile

Ingold 3 occurs only in the DB entry for a tiny holding at Middleton, by the Minsmere River in east Suffolk, where his name appears as the patronymic of one Eadric (in the Latin form Edricus filius ingoldi). This Eadric was the commended lord of two of the six ‘free men’ [in fact including one free woman] on the estate TRE and elsewhere in the same entry is described as the antecessor of Robert Malet (Robert 36), which renders it highly probable that he was the major East Anglian landholder Eadric of Laxfield (Eadric 113) (cf. Williams 2004).

It cannot be assumed that Ingold 3 ever held this or any other land held by his son TRE, although it is unlikely that he was of low status given Eadric’s wealth. Nor, despite the rarity of his name, can Ingold 3 be associated with anyone else of that name with any confidence. All we can really say about Ingold 3, therefore, is that his son must have been born well before c.1045 and thus that this represents Ingold’s floreat.
