Profile

The name Edgar occurs twice in FBB as Ædgar and Ædger Chipingi filius, among 57 minor tenants on the berewick of Bury St Edmunds Abbey at Woolpit, 7½ miles to the east of Bury, in 1086; the corresponding DB entry records a total of 40 free men, 17 villans and 3 bordars on the estate in 1086 but does not include their names (FBB pp. 32-3). The first Edgar entry records him as holding 2 acres rendering 2d while the second records a holding of 2½ acres rendering 2d and service, both holdings being among the smaller of those in the list. Although the name Edgar was fairly common these are the only occurrences of it in the FBB texts. The presence of the patronymic identifier in one rather than both instances may represent a deliberate scribal distinction between two individuals; but on balance it is just more likely that both instances here relate to the same person, Edgar 34 son of Cypping, than to separate individuals. The implicit continuity of holdings between TRE and 1086 in DB need not imply that Edgar 34 already held his land before the Conquest (or that his father had held it before him), although the possibility cannot be ruled out.
