Profile

Sigrith 3’s carucate at Sutton upon Derwent was one among seven holdings in the vill TRE, though only four of them were reckoned as manors (Yorks. 5:E44; 13:E12). The status of her own holding was unclear, since by 1086 there was evidently no agricultural activity there and instead the tenant-in-chief William de Percy had three fisheries in the Derwent:

In eadem uilla habebat Segrida .I. carucatam terrae ad geldum quam dimidia caruca potest arare. Ibi habet nunc Willelmus .III. piscarias reddentes .IIII. solidos. TRE ualuit .XX. solidos.

In the same vill Sigrith had 1 carucate of land geldable, which half a plough can plough. Now William has 3 fisheries there, paying 4 shillings. TRE it was worth 20 shillings.

Access to fishing rights in the Derwent may have made this a significant holding: the other 11 carucates at Sutton were worth only 56 shillings between them in 1066, proportionately around a quarter the value of Sigrith’s carucate.

Sutton was only 6 miles south-east of York, and in an area where several estates belonged to Arkil 2, husband of the Sigrida discussed in connection with Sigrith 2. It is not inconceivable that the same woman was the owner of this carucate TRE.
