Gilbert 39 is recorded (as Gilebertus Bochenel) in the Winton Domesday as the TRE holder of a tenement on the south side of the High Street and near the west gate of Winchester, for which he rendered the customary dues (Biddle 1976: 40, 158). His byname is probably a toponymic one representing one of the several English places now called Bucknell or Bucknall (Tengvik 1938: 125).Bibliography
