Summary

Wulfræd 52 had a small estate in west Dorset TRE assessed at ½ hide and with a value of 5s in 1086.

Profile

Wulfræd 52’s little estate was one of four estates at Wootton (three at Wootton Fitzpaine and one at Abbott’s Wootton) among the hills and little valleys draining down to the sea in west Dorset, and it was by far the smallest of the four. It is possible that his estate and that of Eadmær, which also passed to Count Robert 9 after the Conquest, were parts of a five-hide unit broken up in 1044 when King Edward granted half of it to Orc 1, the founder of Abbotsbury Abbey (S 1004; cf. S 1064). If so, however, then no further evidence of this survives.

Wulfræd 52’s estate was more than 70 miles from that of anyone else of that name in DB, so there is no reason to consider him in connection with any of them.
