Summary

Beorhtflæd 3 was one of 12 minor tenants on a manor of Bury St Edmund’s at Tostock.

Profile

Beorhtflæd 3 was one of five women named in FBB (137(2)v; p.34) among 12 minor tenants on a manor of Bury Abbey at Tostock, 8 miles to the east of Bury, in 1086.  The corresponding DB entry records 17½ free ‘men’ among subtenants on the manor in 1086 but does not include their names.  FBB records Beorhtflæd 3 as holding 4 acres rendering 4d, a tiny holding but more than that held by the other women.  An implicit continuity of holdings between TRE and 1086 in the DB entry neither proves nor precludes the possibility that Beorhtflæd 3 already held her land before the Conquest.
