Name

Offa
Offa 12
Offa 14

Summary

Offa 13 held a small manor in west Sussex under Bishop Æthelric II (Æthelric 64) TRE that was assessed at 2 hides; no TRE value is given in DB, but in 1086 the value was 8s although it actually rendered 15s.

Profile

Offa 13’s small manor was at Treyford, on the edge of the South Downs in west Sussex. He was said to hold it ‘as a fief from the bishop’ TRE, the bishop being Bishop Æethelric II of Selsey (Æthelric 64) and the wording implying that Offa was a dependent tenant. Although Offa held his land ‘as a manor’ it was also regarded as a part of a larger manor of 11 hides held by Æthelheard 27 TRE. By 1086 the 2 hides that Offa had held were being held by a subtenant of Æthelric’s successor, Bishop Stigand of Chichester (Stigand 5), as a prebend in Chichester cathedral, but it is not clear if Offa’s manor had similarly been a prebend in either Chichester or Selsey church TRE.
