Edgar 31
Edgar 33

Summary

Edgar 32 occurs only in the Domesday entry relating to a tiny estate at Mundham in south-east Norfolk that was part of the fief of Robert fitzCorbucion (Robert 56) in 1086.

Profile

The entry records that 30 acres held TRE by a free man were now held by one of Robert’s subtenants, then notes that ‘11 free men of Edgar’s’ hold 30 acres there and concludes by noting that ‘the king and the earl have the soke’. The name Edgar does not occur in connection with any other estate in Norfolk either TRE or in 1086. Numerous explanations are possible, but among the more likely is that Edgar 32 was or had been locally important enough to be the tenurial or commended lord of these men at some point prior to 1086. It is conceivable that Edgar 32 is the same person as Edgar 31 and that both are to be associated with Edgar Ætheling (Edgar 14).
